It’s a sunny Monday morning, and I find myself barefoot in the middle of a creek. The water is the enjoyable kind of cold. The birds and the waterfall in front of me perform a natural symphony. I admire the vivid colors of the moss on the rocks, and see the light that shines through the leaves of the trees above me. I feel very much alive.
The creek walk is part of the Nature coach certification training I had signed up for only the Friday before. This is often how I make important decisions. All of a sudden, I am being taken over by an unstoppable urge, and I move mountains (and a lot of meetings) to make it happen.
The training is challenging for me. I thought I’d bluff my way through it with my natural charm and excellent coaching skills, but I am humbled by the outdoor skills of the other participants, and I am struggling to understand their deep Swiss German.
On Tuesday afternoon, I emerge from the forest, humbled, inspired, with leafs and twigs on my clothes, my hair smelling like campfire. Tired, and touched. It wasn’t easy, but I can’t wait until part 2 of the training.
Remember how I wrote about my weltschmerz in my last newsletter? For me, this training is a stepping stone that helps me turn the pain I feel because of how we treat our planet into fuel to contribute to a society that is more in balance with nature.
Even though I know there are still many steps ahead on the journey of integrating my love for nature into my day-to-day work, it is tremendously motivating to just get started, and meet like-minded people along the way.
My next step is participating in Ulab, an MIT course that attracts movers and shakers from all over the world (you can still sign up if you want, kickoff is September 12!) - and meet, and who knows co-create beautiful things with, my fellow students.
And I’m curious, what do you do when you know it’s time for a career shift, but you don’t know the exact direction yet? I’d love to hear from you!
